Stove Burner Not Working? Complete Diagnosis & Repair Guide

When a stove burner stops working, it disrupts meal preparation. The good news is that burner problems are often diagnosed quickly, and many are fixable at home. This guide covers both gas and electric stoves and will help you understand what's wrong.

🔧 Important: Always turn off the stove and let it cool completely before investigating any problems. Never work on gas stoves without ensuring all gas valves are in the OFF position.

ELECTRIC STOVE BURNERS

1. Burned-Out Coil Element (Most Common)

Electric coil burners eventually burn out and need replacement. This is the most common reason for a non-working burner.

Signs of a burned-out coil:

  • No heat from the burner
  • Visible cracks or blistering on the coil
  • Discoloration or corrosion

Replacement process:

  • Unplug the stove (for portable units) or turn off the circuit breaker
  • Let the burner cool completely
  • Twist the burner counterclockwise to remove it
  • Disconnect the plug underneath
  • Install the new burner and plug it in
  • Turn the power back on and test

2. Faulty Burner Control Switch

The control knob controls power to each burner. If this switch fails, power won't reach the burner even if the element is fine.

Troubleshooting:

  • Try using a different burner with the same switch knob
  • If that burner works, the element is fine and the switch is faulty
  • Professional replacement is usually required

3. Broken Connection or Loose Socket

The socket where the burner plugs in can crack or corrode, preventing electrical contact.

What to try:

  • Remove the burner and inspect the socket for cracks
  • Try a different burner element in that socket
  • If the new element works, the socket is fine
  • If it doesn't work, the socket needs professional replacement

GAS STOVE BURNERS

1. Clogged Burner Holes

Gas burners have small holes that allow gas to escape for ignition. Spills, boil-overs, and debris can clog these holes, preventing the burner from lighting.

How to clean:

  • Turn off the gas valve for that burner
  • Let the stove cool completely
  • Remove the burner head (if removable)
  • Use a thin wire or toothpick to clear each hole
  • Wipe the burner gently with a damp cloth
  • Reinstall and test

2. Faulty Igniter

Electronic igniters spark to light the gas. If the igniter is broken, the burner won't light (though you may smell gas).

Signs of a failed igniter:

  • You smell gas but the burner won't light
  • You can light the burner manually with a match, but the igniter doesn't work
  • No spark sound when the knob is turned

Note: Igniter replacement requires professional service for most gas stoves.

3. Gas Valve Issues

The gas valve controls the flow of gas to the burner. If it's stuck or defective, gas won't reach the burner.

Warning signs:

  • Other burners work fine
  • No gas smell even when the valve is turned on
  • Valve feels stuck or won't turn smoothly

Note: Gas valve issues require professional service. Don't attempt to force a stuck valve.

BOTH ELECTRIC AND GAS STOVES

Control Board or Wiring Issues

Sometimes the problem isn't with the burner itself, but with the electronic controls or wiring that power it.

Diagnostic steps:

  • Check if other burners on the same control circuit work
  • If all burners on one "side" don't work, it could be a control board issue
  • This requires professional diagnosis and repair

When to Call a Professional

Call a professional if:

  • You're uncomfortable working with electrical or gas components
  • Multiple burners aren't working
  • You smell gas but can't find the source
  • DIY troubleshooting didn't solve the problem
